Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Q&A
What is bioidentical hormone replacement?
Bioidentical hormone replacement is a treatment that can replenish some of your body’s hormones if there’s an imbalance.
Unlike more traditional types of hormone replacement, the bioidentical variety uses hormones that are molecularly identical to the hormones produced in your body’s glands. Bioidentical hormones come from plants.
The hormones in your body are responsible for regulating many processes and tasks, including your:
- Metabolism and weight
- Brain function
- Sex drive and Sexual Function
- Sleep cycle
- Menstrual cycle
When there’s an imbalance, you can get a combination of unusual symptoms that affect you more than you might anticipate. Through hormone testing, you can determine if you have a hormone imbalance and whether bioidentical hormone replacement might be an effective treatment.
What conditions do bioidentical hormone replacement treat?
Bioidentical hormone replacement can balance hormones in both men and women. However, the therapy works differently and treats different issues for each gender:
Estrogen hormone replacement
Bioidentical estrogen can replace estrogen, a female sex hormone, in women. As you approach menopause, your estrogen levels decrease. Common symptoms from estrogen loss include fatigue, mood swings, hot flashes, and vaginal dryness.
Testosterone hormone replacement
Testosterone is used in both men and women. Men with low testosterone can get various symptoms from their hormone imbalance, including low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, depression, and irritability.
Bioidentical testosterone is used for women as well, to provide improved energy, motivation, confidence, and libido.
How does bioidentical hormone replacement work?
If you come in for a consultation at IgniteRx Medical Fitness with symptoms consistent with a hormone imbalance, Dr. Marquette examines you and asks for details about your symptoms. If she decides that bioidentical hormone replacement is a fitting option for your treatment, you undergo a minor procedure in the office.
During the procedure, Dr. Marquette provides local anesthesia, so you’re not uncomfortable or in pain. She makes a small incision, usually in the upper buttock area or love handle area, and inserts a BioTE® bioidentical hormone pellets containing the proper amount of hormones you need. Pellets are smaller than a grain of rice, so they are difficult to feel once they have been placed.
Over time, the pellet slowly and steadily releases its hormones into your bloodstream. You can anticipate needing a few weeks to notice a difference in your symptoms, but timing varies from person to person.
A hormone imbalance can make it seem like you're aging at an accelerated pace. To find out if bioidentical hormone replacement is right for you, call IgniteRx Medical Fitness or request an appointment online today.
