STELLATE GANGLION BLOCK
A stellate ganglion block (SGB) is a procedure used to treat certain conditions resulting from chronic (long-term) overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, which is the system that prepares our body for emergencies (the fight or flight response). The stellate ganglion block is an injection of local anesthetic into an area of the neck (cervical sympathetic trunk). The anesthetic temporarily and partially blocks part of the sympathetic nervous system. This block works by “resetting” or “rebooting” the fight or flight response that has become dysfunctional (inappropriately activated) in some individuals exposed to highly stressful situations.
The sympathetic nervous system controls the autonomic functions of our body, such as heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and pain perception. Too much activation can lead to chronic sleep disturbance, increased irritability, poor concentration, and sexual dysfunction. Like a computer that has too many windows open, our brains can get overloaded, and this procedure can reboot your body’s emergency response system.
STELLATE GANGLION BLOCK TREATMENT
Stellate Ganglion Blocks are used primarily to combat conditions such as over-reactivity to stress, chronic anxiety, PTSD, chronic upper extremity pain (RSD), as well as circulatory problems and sensory changes that are maintained by the sympathetic nervous system. The procedure can be an invaluable tool in the treatment of pain caused by nerve injury and nervous system disorders.
